The webinar also received various shares and questions on the design SL/CEL activities, including the steps to build the program, the difficulties and challenges of integrating SL/CEL into the subjects, and the experience of working with community partners from lecturers around the country.
The Webinar 3 “Preparing students for SL/CEL activities”was successfully organized with over 50 delegates. Presentations from the speakers:

During the discussion, the webinar received many shares and relevant questions from participants, demonstrating the high interest of Vietnamese scholars in SL/CEL.

The Webinar 4 focuses on discussion and sharing from the speakers about SL/CEL, the approach of each institute and university to adopt SL/CEL, and the value of SL/CEL from each speaker’s perspective
Webinar 5 was a success, with approximately 40 delegates from universities, colleges, and social groups participating. To promote the interaction and sharing of the participating academics, the program format has been revised to include a significant amount of time for delegate discussion in small groups, centered on two questions:
What are the most prevalent techniques of assessment? How can you know which method is the most effective?
How should reflection be designed to be effective? In a packed classroom, how should students reflect?
The lecturers provided numerous suggestions based on their experience in teaching, SL/CEL implementation, and community service. Aside from that, they are concerned about how to properly construct the assessment and reflection process in SL/CEL. Following that, discourses in Webinar 7, assisted educators in effectively developing assessment and reflection in the SL/CEL.
Webinar 6 attracted more than 60 participants, including lecturers and academics from 25 universities, colleges, and civil society groups, demonstrating that SL/CEL research is a hot topic. Many educators shared their experiences with research initiatives, government programs, NGOs, commercial organizations, and even municipal governments. Assoc. Tran Thi Thu Ha (University of Agriculture and Forestry-Hue University) helped the participating scholars introduce the “development process-principles and methods of the Approach of Community-Based Participatory Research (CBR),” “Research ethics” and “implementing CBR for students with funding from outside the budget” through two presentations in the webinar. “The faculty and students’ passion, devotion, and excitement not only bring education closer to the community and have a more direct approach, but they also assist instructors and students in overcoming financial hurdles.” Following that, MSc. Le Thi Thu Huong (Danang Architecture University) and MSc. Nguyen Hong An (Hoa Sen University) presented case studies on topics such as “community-based tourism branding” and “researching psychological health”. The talk assisted researchers in a better understanding of CBR, bringing in fresh ideas for developing effective SL/CEL studies.
The series of webinars for capacity building on SL/CEL (Service-Learning/Community-Engaged Learning) for VNES members in 2021 concluded with Webinar 7.
The sharing and discussions from speakers and participants demonstrated the importance of connecting and developing partnerships between stakeholders in SL/CEL including students, lecturers, faculties, communities, and other partners.
The framework E (Exploitative)-T (Transactional)-T (Transformational), according to which the development or regression of relationships is dependent on factors such as intimacy, equality, and integrity in a partnership relationship, is mentioned in the presentation by MSc. Phan Tran Kieu Trang, Head of Community Engaged Learning Center, Lecturer at Danang Architecture University. Based on those aspects, re-evaluating the connection will provide the researcher/project owner with an objective perspective to determine the best strategy to connect and deepen the multi-stakeholder collaboration.
Furthermore, in Webinar 7, the pictures of deaf children in the “Coloring Dreams” project inspired the lecturers to continue with the project despite obvious challenges at the start.
SL/CEL not only provides students with the essential information and skills they use in practice, but it also opens their hearts, awakening kindness and compassion among people in society.
We are proud to contribute to the development of SL/CEL in Vietnam, thus raising a future generation of students who are socially responsible.
2021 is a challenging year when the pandemic has impacted many aspects, from mental health to physical health, economic issues, culture, social life of many people. However, besides those challenges, the pandemic is also an opportunity for higher education institutions to make positive changes and come together to connect and creatively solve common problems. It can be seen that during the past year, universities/colleges are making more efforts than ever to transform teaching and learning, as well as carry out another very important mission: serving the community. This spirit is clearly demonstrated with many initiatives in the SL/CEL model that have been implemented in national and international universities. Thereby, once again SL/CEL is proven to be an effective method in 3 important missions of higher education: Teaching – Research – Community Service.
Also in 2021, with an effort to connect universities to participate in community activities, VNES – Vietnam Network of Engaged Scholars – organized by Vietnam Campus Engage (VCE) was founded with coordination from the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS), funding from Irish AID and the cooperation of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Office in Hanoi, has been very effective in capacity building and SL/CEL development. Up to now, the network has attracted the participation of more than 300 members who are lecturers, researchers, leaders and higher education personnel related to SL/CEL at 120 universities and colleges, research centers and institutes in Vietnam. This shows the growing interest of Scholars in community service.
To close the year 2021 with many imprints, the Virtual Workshop on Institutionalization of Service Learning/Community Engaged Learning (SL/CEL) in higher education will be held on January 14, 2022 with the aim:
Connecting, enhancing exchange, discussion, sharing of academics and practical models of SL/CEL domestically and internationally;
Sharing experiences in bringing the SL/CEL model into the training system of international universities (from the US, Ireland and Hong Kong);
Honoring the achievements of Vietnamese scholars in community service activities;
Announce the results of activities in 2021 and discuss the implementation plans in 2022 of VNES.

2021 là một năm nhiều biến động. Ảnh hưởng mang tính toàn cầu của đại dịch đã tác động đến nhiều mặt, từ sức khỏe tinh thần đến thể chất, các vấn đề kinh tế, văn hoá, xã hội đời sống của nhiều người. Tuy nhiên, bên cạnh những thách thức đó, đại dịch cũng là cơ hội để các cơ sở giáo dục bậc cao có những chuyển mình tích cực và xích lại gần nhau để kết nối, cùng sáng tạo giải quyết vấn đề chung.
Cũng trong năm 2021, với nỗ lực kết nối các trường đại học tham gia vào các hoạt động cộng đồng, VNES – Mạng lưới Học giả Kết nối Cộng đồng Việt Nam – đã hoạt động rất hiệu quả trong việc nâng cao năng lực và thúc đẩy phát triển SL/CEL. Tính đến thời điểm hiện tại mạng lưới thu hút sự tham gia của hơn 300 thành viên là các giảng viên, nhà nghiên cứu, lãnh đạo và nhân sự giáo dục bậc cao liên quan SL/CEL tại 120 trường đại học, cao đẳng, trung tâm, viện nghiên cứu tại Việt Nam. Điều này cho thấy sự quan tâm ngày càng lớn của các Học giả đến các vấn đề hỗ trợ và phục vụ cộng đồng.
Để khép lại năm 2021 với nhiều dấu ấn, Hội thảo Quốc gia Phục vụ cộng đồng trong hệ thống đào tạo của giáo dục bậc cao – chương trình tổng kết của VNES năm 2021- được tổ chức vào ngày 14/01/2022 nhằm mục đích:
Kết nối, tăng cường trao đổi, thảo luận, chia sẻ học thuật và mô hình thực tiễn về SL/CEL trong nước và quốc tế;
Chia sẻ các kinh nghiệm đưa mô hình SL/CEL vào hệ thống đào tạo của các đại học quốc tế (từ Hoa Kỳ, Ireland và Hồng Kông);
Tôn vinh các thành tựu của học giả Việt Nam trong hoạt động phục vụ cộng đồng;
Thông báo kết quả hoạt động trong năm 2021 và thảo luận các kế hoạch triển khai trong năm 2022 của VNES.

The VNES Coordination Board would like to take this opportunity to announce the Engaged Achievement 2021andEngaged Scholar 2021 award program, which is an initiative of VNES led by the Vietnam Campus Engage (VCE) and the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS) under funding from Irish Aid.
The award recognizes and promotes the learning and research activities and initiatives of scholars who are VNES members through Service-Learning/Community-Engaged Learning (SL/CEL). The reward includes small financial incentives to encourage scholars to begin and maintain these activities. Furthermore, VNES recognizes and glorifies these achievements to the entire network and the general public in order to promote the development of SL/CEL activities at higher education institutions.

Engaged Achievement Award: for groups (large-scale programs/projects coordinated by university/college departments, faculties, etc.)
Award funds: 10,000,000 VND each prize.
Engaged Scholar Award: for individuals or small groups (subjects/activities/small projects led by a university or college professor or a small group of scholars). Students can also submit proposals for excellent student-led projects.

Service-learning (SL) is a structured learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection. (Jacob 1996; Seifer 1998; National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, 2007).
Community-Engaged Learning (CEL): Community engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. (Carnegie Foundation, 2006).
VNES-Vietnam Network of Engaged Scholars is the network of scholars (lecturers, researchers, leaders, and higher education personnel) related to SL/CEL in Vietnam.
The SL/CEL subject/project/activity development coaching program for members of the VNES-Vietnam Network of Engaged Scholars is organized by the Vietnam Campus Engage (VCE) and the Center for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS) under funding from Irish Aid.
Program Objectives:
Support VNES lecturers/members to develop outlines and/or detailed plans for SL/CEL subjects/projects/activities.
Subjects, projects, activities ,and SL/CEL initiatives with grades for students.
Projects, internships, and other learning activities SL/CEL have a different form of grades.
Support VNES’s lecturers in designing and implementing SL/CEL subject development/project/activity program.
Coaching Format:
Depending on the lecturers’ needs of consulting, the program will provide assistance in the form of individual or group discussions based on the substance of ideas or outlines of activities of each lecturer or member.
Conditions of participation:
Being a member of the VNES-Vietnam Network of Engaged Scholars;
Working as a lecturer and staff member at a higher education institution in Vietnam, with a desire to establish and improve educational activities based on the SL/CEL combined application of community service learning.

Service-Learning (SL): là một trải nghiệm học tập có cấu trúc, kết hợp hoạt động phục vụ cộng đồng với các mục tiêu học tập rõ ràng, có sự chuẩn bị, và có phản hồi (Jacob 1996; Seifer 1998; National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, 2007).

Hìnhthức tư vấn:
Tùy theo đặc điểm cụ thể của từng yêu cầu tư vấn, chương trình sẽ có các hỗ trợ theo hình thức thảo luận cá nhân/nhóm dựa trên nội dung ý tưởng/đề cương hoạt động của từng giảng viên/thành viên.

VNES – Mạng lưới Học giả Kết nối Cộng đồng Việt Nam (Vietnam Network of Engaged Scholars) hoạt động trong khuôn khổ của Liên minh Học cùng cộng đồng (CELA), do Trung tâm Hợp tác và Phát triển Giáo dục – (Vietnam Campus Engage) và Trung tâm Nghiên cứu Phát triển Bền vững (CSDS) điều phối dưới sự tài trợ của Quỹ Viện trợ Ireland (Irish AID).
Ngày 24/09/2021, chương trình Webinar 1: “Giáo dục bậc cao và Học thông qua phục vụ cộng đồng (SL/CEL) trong bối cảnh Covid-19” đã kết thúc thành công với sự tham gia của gần 80 đại biểu đến từ 57 trường đại học, cao đẳng và các tổ chức xã hội trong cả nước.
Đây cũng là sự kiện đánh dấu ra mắt của VNES – Mạng lưới Học giả Kết nối Cộng đồng Việt Nam với hơn 170 thành viên đến từ 86 đại học, cao đẳng trên khắp cả nước.
Ngày 24/09/2021, Webinar “Học thông qua phục vụ cộng đồng SL/CEL trong bối cảnh Covid-19” với sự tham gia của 80 học giả từ 57 trường đại học trên khắp cả nước – đánh dấu hoạt động đầu tiên của VNES – Mạng lưới Học giả Kết nối Cộng đồng Việt Nam, đã kết thúc thành công.
Các bài trình bày của các diễn giả đưa ra nhiều góc nhìn đa dạng, tham khảo các hoạt động đáp ứng với Covid-19 trên toàn cầu đến các khởi xướng của các đại học ở Việt Nam mới đây. Từ các lưu ý cho giảng viên hướng dẫn đến các vấn đề đạo đức và quản lý rủi ro ra sao khi giảng dạy e-SL/CEL trong bối cảnh đại dịch.
Dù thời gian cho phần thảo luận nhóm khá hạn chế, các học giả từ khắp mọi miền vẫn sôi nổi đưa ra nhiều ý tưởng đa dạng cho vai trò của giáo dục bậc cao, như lấp khoảng trống trong dịch vụ công hỗ trợ nhóm người yếu thế; thúc đẩy sự hợp tác giữa đại học và các tổ chức cộng đồng, các cơ quan nhà nước và doanh nghiệp; vai trò đi đầu trong chuyển đổi số cho giáo dục và cơ quan dịch vụ công; đến nguồn dữ liệu và nghiên cứu vận động chính sách.
Ý kiến chung của các học giả tham gia Webinar về vai trò của đại học – giáo dục bậc cao nói chung – là hãy tùy theo những nguồn lực, những điểm mạnh của từng trường, hỗ trợ phục vụ công và đóng góp cho công cuộc tái thiết đất nước – đã được xem như là tuyên ngôn của VNES. Điều đó có ý nghĩa hơn bao giờ hết chính trong giai đoạn này khi các cộng đồng dễ tổn thương, nền kinh tế quốc gia, ngân sách nhà nước, hệ thống chăm sóc sức khỏe và tâm lý con người hiện nay đều đã và đang kiệt quệ qua đại dịch.
Xin trích lại lời của bà Gianna Pomata – Cựu giáo sư Viện Lịch sử Y khoa, Đại học John Hopkins – “Đại dịch Cái chết Đen (Black Death) đã thực sự đánh dấu cái kết của thời kỳ Trung cổ, và bắt đầu một cái gì đó khác. “Cái gì đó” chính là thời kỳ Phục Hưng, và các đại học của ngày đó đã giúp xây dựng lại những nền kinh tế sụp đổ và những cộng đồng tan nát. Liệu khi Covid-19 qua đi, lịch sử sẽ viết lại những điều tương tự về vai trò của giáo dục bậc cao hôm nay?”
Các học giả, các đại học của Việt Nam cũng như trên thế giới, đã và đang cam kết sẵn sàng viết nên lịch sử đó.
